Without a doubt, Wales has the world’s best hiking instructions.

“Go through a gate and then through a second gate on the left.  Walk straight up two fields with hedges to your right. Cross the middle of the third field to a stile at the bottom of Park Wood.”

“Fork right heading along a grass track which goes up the common. The track heads uphill past a pond toward a prominent field wall. Above you will see the deep gully of Cwm Cwnstab running off the Black Mountains escarpment. Follow the wall on your right and where it turns right, follow it down a gully to cross a stream.”

No joke - these are real hiking directions, posted on the Brecon Beacons National Park website! What’s more — they actually worked?! Our week of hiking in Wales was absolutely unlike anywhere else I have every been. We didn’t do any overnights this time,  instead we rented a beautiful old cottage, and did day hikes around Brecon Beacons and along the coast. Lots of rolling hills, walking right through herds of sheep, and my favourite, wandering past ponies grazing on the top of mountains.

Our favourites day hikes were:

TALGARTH WOODS AND WATERFALLS

A walk along Mynydd Llangorse - with a picnic on top!

And a piece of the Pembrookshire Coastal Path winding along the ocean.

Sadly, our attempt to do the Beacons Circuit was rained out, but it did look like a spectacular hike until we had to call it off.

Also, castles!

Because it was Wales, we also checked out Raglan Castle, and its hilarious collection of “how not to injure yourself” warning signs.
